Amid the growing conversations about Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election zoning, the National Council of Royal Monarchs (NCRM) has voiced a strong recommendation that the North-Central geopolitical zone should produce the next president. This position adds a significant voice to the ongoing debate on how to balance Nigeria’s power-sharing arrangement among its diverse regions.
The NCRM argues that the North-Central region, often regarded as the Middle Belt and a key political swing zone, deserves the presidency as part of equitable national representation. The council’s spokesperson emphasized that the unity and peace of the nation hinge on fairness in power rotation, and ignoring the North-Central demands could deepen regional tensions.
Their call comes at a time when major political parties like the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have zoned their presidential ticket to the Southern region, while other zones like the North-East and North-West continue to push for their interests. The NCRM’s stance is therefore a pushback against the prevailing decisions, aiming to ensure that the Middle Belt is not politically marginalized.
The group noted that the North-Central area’s strategic importance politically, culturally, and economically equips it to foster national cohesion. Furthermore, many prominent leaders and influential figures hail from this region, reinforcing the argument for their right to the presidency.
As Nigeria gearing towards the 2027 elections, such recommendations intensify the zoning debate, urging political parties and stakeholders to come together in designing a transparent and inclusive power-sharing formula that satisfies the country’s heterogeneous makeup.
