Former Chelsea midfielder and Super Eagles legend John Obi Mikel has expressed concerns that Chelsea FC is unlikely to win the English Premier League (EPL) or the UEFA Champions League (UCL) this season, citing serious weaknesses in their squad balance and defensive quality. Speaking on his Obi One Podcast, Mikel pointed out that despite Chelsea’s attacking potential, the lack of a strong, experienced goalkeeper and defensive frailty is a major obstacle to clinching major trophies.

Mikel specifically criticized the club’s failure to acquire key players in positions such as goalkeeper, center-back, and striker during the summer transfer window. He highlighted that mistakes and inexperience at the back, including numerous red cards and injuries to key defenders like Levi Colwill, have left Chelsea dangerously exposed in defense.

“Defenders win you titles,” Mikel stressed, underscoring how Chelsea’s defensive problems make it “impossible” for them to compete at the highest level, especially in a demanding season with strong contenders like Arsenal, Manchester City, and Liverpool. He also noted that Chelsea’s recent performances show promise going forward, with goals and chances created, but the shaky defense poses a significant challenge.

This candid assessment adds to growing criticism of the current Chelsea squad and coaching strategies under manager Enzo Maresca. Despite hopes raised by some signings, Mikel remains skeptical about Chelsea’s chances of winning the EPL or UCL trophies this season unless defensive reinforcements and tactical improvements are made swiftly.
