Political analyst and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Usman Okai, has described former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s Peter Obi as the biggest political threats to President Bola Tinubu ahead of future elections.

Okai, in a statement on Friday, argued that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) currently enjoys an edge but warned that both Atiku and Obi still command strong influence across the country, particularly in the North and South-East.

He, however, advised the PDP to be strategic in its approach, noting that the party may need to focus more on rebuilding its structure and mobilizing grassroots support with a long-term plan to take power in 2031 rather than relying on short-term strategies.

According to him, the political dynamics of Nigeria show that Tinubu’s incumbency, coupled with internal crises in opposition parties, gives the APC an advantage ahead of 2027. Still, he insisted that underestimating Atiku or Obi would be a costly mistake for the ruling party.

Okai further stressed that Nigeria’s democratic process requires a stronger and more united opposition to keep the government accountable, urging PDP members to work towards internal unity, credible leadership, and a message that resonates with Nigerians beyond party lines.
