Journalists under the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, have issued a call to the state police command demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the killing of their colleague, Ojo Peter. The late Peter, a former reporter with Parrot Extra and Daily Monitor, was shot dead during a daylight robbery on August 18, 2025, along the Molete-Oke Ado axis of Ibadan.

The NUJ made this appeal through a statement signed by the acting Chairman of the Oyo State Council, Olusola Oladapo, expressing deep sadness and concern over the violent death of one of their own. According to the statement made available on September 9, 2025, Ojo Peter was robbed of his cross bag by suspected armed robbers despite his pleas that the bag contained no money before being shot in the back.

Journalists in the state have raised serious questions about the security situation, urging the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. Oladapo emphasized that the attack on Peter raises critical concerns about the safety of journalists, who are often vulnerable targets in volatile environments.

The police have reportedly arrested two suspects believed to be part of an armed robbery gang terrorizing the area, with one suspect killed in a confrontation during arrest. This gang has allegedly been involved in similar daylight robberies targeting victims with bags or valuables.

The NUJ and the wider media community are calling on law enforcement authorities to ensure justice is served and to step up efforts toward improving the safety and security of journalists in Ibadan and across Oyo State.
