The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State has strongly condemned the recent approval by the State House of Assembly of a ₦100 billion loan requested by Governor Hyacinth Alia to finance infrastructural development projects across the state. In a statement issued by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Tim Nyor, PDP described the loan approval as reckless, hasty, and ill-considered.
The party accused the state government of plunging Benue into another cycle of debt amidst economic challenges faced by the people, particularly following fuel subsidy removals and rising costs of living. PDP highlighted that the state has received substantial funds from federal allocations, yet instead of prudent management, it has chosen to embark on this significant borrowing.
PDP raised concerns about transparency, accountability, and fiscal discipline, warning that future generations would bear the burden of debts incurred without their consent or clear developmental benefits. The party called on the House of Assembly to reconsider the approval and to uphold the principle of checks and balances rather than acting as a rubber stamp for the executive arm.
Governor Alia’s administration had justified the loan for infrastructure projects including hospital renovations, road construction, school building, and skill acquisition centers aimed at boosting economic development. However, PDP insists that borrowing should be a last resort after effectively utilizing available funds and resources.
