The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has revealed that the pool of aspirants vying for the party’s presidential ticket in the 2027 general elections is wider than popularly perceived. Beyond the well-known names of former President Goodluck Jonathan, ex-Labour Party candidate Peter Obi, and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, several other influential figures within the party are quietly positioning themselves to contest the presidency.
This disclosure comes amid growing speculation about the party’s zoning arrangements and the political trajectory of some of its high-profile members. PDP leaders assert that the party boasts a strong bench of credible candidates, reflecting diverse regional and ethnic representation, and expressing confidence in the quality and capability of the aspirants.
Following the party’s 102nd National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja in August 2025, the PDP announced the zoning of its presidential candidacy to the southern part of the country for the upcoming election. This arrangement is intended to deepen national integration and ensure fairness in power rotation.
The recent appointment of Iliya Damagun as the substantive national chairman has also bolstered party unity and bolstered the electoral machinery ahead of the 2027 contest. The PDP is gearing up for its national convention in November 2025 in Ibadan, where many of the aspirants will officially declare their ambitions and the party’s leadership will be renewed.
While former President Goodluck Jonathan and Peter Obi’s potential returns to the PDP remain subjects of debate, the party has maintained that its focus is on restructuring and preparing for a robust contest. The chances of Jonathan or Obi contesting under the PDP banner remain uncertain, with party officials emphasizing that neither has been officially approached.
Notable governors such as Bala Mohammed of Bauchi, along with other prominent figures holding key positions nationwide, are expected to play significant roles in shaping the party’s presidential race dynamics. PDP spokesperson Debo Ologunagba stressed the importance of internal democracy and consensus-building within the party as it seeks to present a formidable alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The PDP continues to work on strengthening grassroots structures and expanding its appeal across Nigeria, bolstered by the emerging aspirants’ diverse backgrounds and governance track records. Analysts predict a highly competitive primary process within the party that will set the tone for the 2027 presidential election.
