The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially declared the recent state congress purportedly held in Cross River State as illegal and void. The party’s National Working Committee (NWC) stepped in following reports of an unauthorized congress, emphasizing that the national leadership had earlier postponed congresses in Cross River, Plateau, and Kebbi states.

In a statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP clarified that no congress was conducted in Cross River as alleged. The NWC took decisive action by constituting a Caretaker Committee to oversee the party’s affairs in the state following the expiration of the previous executive committee’s tenure, which was elected four years ago.

The Caretaker Committee, chaired by former federal lawmaker Bassey Eko Ewa and with Dr. Bassey Joseph Adim as Secretary, comprises 18 members drawn from various local government areas and interest groups. The committee is tasked with stabilizing the party’s structure, reconciling factions, and preparing for a new, properly conducted congress.

Cross River, once a stronghold of the PDP, fell under the control of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2021 after then-Governor Ben Ayade’s defection. The party views the caretaker committee’s inauguration as part of an ongoing effort to rebuild its influence and regain lost political ground in the strategically important South-South region.

The PDP leadership called on all party members and stakeholders in Cross River to rally behind the caretaker committee to ensure unity and work toward a successful subsequent congress and upcoming elections.

This move signals the PDP’s firm resolve to adhere to party laws and processes while positioning itself strongly for the 2027 general elections and beyond.
