Chief Goodluck Chidiebere Egwu, the National Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the South-East Zone, has clarified that no lawful congress has been conducted by the party at any level—ward, local government, or state—in Ebonyi State. This statement was made in response to recent media reports claiming that PDP held a congress and elected new executives in Ebonyi.
Egwu, speaking through his special assistant Prince Ify Chijoke, described the reported congress as an illegal event orchestrated by agents aligned with the All Progressives Congress (APC) to destabilize the PDP in Ebonyi. He explained that the tenure of the previous executive bodies, including the caretaker committee, has expired, and no fresh, valid congress has taken place since then.
He further pointed out that a Federal High Court in Abakaliki issued an order on December 11, 2024, restraining the PDP and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from conducting or monitoring any congress in Ebonyi State due to identified irregularities. The court’s ruling remains binding, with no appeal or overturn yet.
Egwu assured PDP members and the public that preparations are ongoing for free, fair, and constitutionally guided congresses, which will involve stakeholders from all 171 wards in Ebonyi. The dates for these congresses will be announced in due course.
The National Vice Chairman stressed the importance of calm and commitment from genuine PDP supporters, reassuring them of the party’s resolve to reclaim its strength in Ebonyi ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Egwu also condemned any attempts to create confusion within the party ranks and urged loyalty, warning against propaganda and interference from opposing political parties. He confirmed the legitimacy of the current PDP leadership in the state, including Senator Samuel Anyanwu and Ifeanyi Odii as the undisputed party chairman.
This clarification is significant as it addresses recent controversies and legal battles within the PDP in Ebonyi State, emphasizing adherence to due process and party constitution.
