The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has cautioned the Nigerian Senate against rushing the confirmation of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). PDP stressed that the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process hinges on a transparent and thorough screening process.

Speaking after inaugurating a sub-committee for the party’s upcoming elective convention, PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba said Nigerians and the international community are watching closely to ensure that the Senate conducts a merit-based confirmation rather than a politically motivated rubber-stamping exercise. The party warned that a rushed approval could erode public confidence in the electoral system, which was already weakened by controversies during the 2023 general elections.

Ologunagba highlighted that effective democratic institutions ensure accountability irrespective of who leads them and called on the nominee to recognize the heavy responsibility that comes with the role. The PDP expressed hope that the Senate would act in the interest of democracy and good governance by conducting a thorough vetting.

The party also reiterated its readiness for the 2025 National Convention, emphasizing transparency and adherence to INEC guidelines, highlighting the importance of credible electoral processes at all levels.
