Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate and prominent political figure, has strongly condemned the recent violent attack on traders at Onitsha Main Market in Anambra State, which resulted in the death of several innocent citizens, including a pregnant woman. Obi’s condemnation came amid growing public outrage over the actions of a security outfit accused of perpetrating the attack in the commercial hub of the southeastern city.

In a statement posted on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on September 9, 2025, Obi deplored the reckless violence against hardworking traders who contribute significantly to the local and national economy. He described the incident as deeply worrisome and called for thorough scrutiny and proper reorganization of security outfits operating in the area.

Obi lamented, “It is very worrisome that state-backed outfits created to help with the security situation are instead worsening the plight of already terrorized citizens and sometimes acting even worse than the criminals they were meant to confront.”

Recalling a similar occurrence, Obi referenced the Udo Ga-Achi Security Outfit earlier accused of assaulting a youth corper in Anambra, highlighting a troubling pattern of security forces acting outside acceptable limits.

He further urged that all those responsible for the violent acts be brought to justice and emphasized the imperative for security formations that are well-scrutinized, law-abiding, and accountable to the people they serve.

Obi extended his deepest sympathies to the families of the victims, praying for strength and comfort for them and eternal rest for the departed souls.

The attack has sparked widespread calls for systemic reforms in security management within Onitsha and other Nigerian commercial centers, highlighting the urgent need for transparent policing and respect for human rights to ensure the safety of traders and residents.
