Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has faulted the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for imposing what he described as excessive taxes on already struggling Nigerians.

Speaking on the state of the nation, Obi lamented that citizens are being suffocated by multiple levies at a time when the economy is facing severe challenges. He said the government’s approach to revenue generation is pushing ordinary Nigerians deeper into poverty instead of providing relief.

Obi argued that rather than overburdening the masses with taxes, the government should focus on reducing the cost of governance, fighting corruption, and creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive. According to him, prioritizing production and investment would expand the economy and increase revenue without overtaxing the people.

He further warned that policies which fail to consider the plight of ordinary citizens could worsen social unrest and insecurity. Obi urged the government to embrace people-oriented economic strategies that promote inclusiveness and shared prosperity.

The Labour Party stalwart reiterated his belief that with better fiscal discipline, transparency, and a focus on industrialization, Nigeria could achieve sustainable growth without suffocating its citizens under heavy taxation.
