Political analysts and university dons have alleged that many Nigerian politicians are defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC) primarily because they fear losing their seats in the 2027 general elections if they remain in opposition parties. Speaking during a recent political forum, Professor Jonah Onuoha of Taraba State University expressed that the ongoing wave of defections is driven more by self-preservation instincts than ideological alignment.

The APC has seen significant defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with several governors, lawmakers, and party stalwarts switching allegiance. High-profile moves include governors from Enugu, Akwa Ibom, and Delta states, among others. These defections have weakened the PDP considerably in key regions like the South-South and Southeast, traditionally its strongholds.

The professors noted that politicians gravitate toward the ruling party to secure access to federal resources, patronage, and the machinery that may enhance their re-election prospects. They predicted that this trend could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape in the buildup to 2027, further consolidating APC’s dominance.

They advised opposition parties to urgently reform and unite to check the APC’s growing influence and prevent further political migration driven by electability fears rather than substantive political convictions.
