Nigerian singer-songwriter Johnny Drille has opened up about his music journey and how record labels initially wanted to change his unique sound. Before signing with Mavin Records in 2017, Drille revealed that other major labels expressed interest in signing him on the condition that he altered his original alternative folk style.

In a 2018 interview, Johnny Drille explained that his discovery came after posting a cover that caught the attention of Don Jazzy, the Mavin Records boss. Unlike other labels, Don Jazzy appreciated his authentic sound and gave him the freedom to develop his musical identity without pressure to conform to mainstream trends.

Drille, who blends folk with African elements, recognized the challenges of standing out in a music scene dominated by Afrobeat but believes every genre has its audience. His experience underscores the importance of artistic integrity and highlights how Mavin Records’ support helped him rise as one of Nigeria’s most distinctive voices.
