Katsina State is grappling with severe insecurity that has led to the closure of schools and markets, the abandonment of farmlands, and mass displacement across eight affected Local Government Areas (LGAs). Governor Umar Dikko Radda revealed these distressing developments while discussing active negotiations with bandit groups and unveiling an 18-month European Union-funded project aimed at conflict prevention and resilience in Katsina.
The affected LGAs include Jibia, Batsari, Danmusa, Kankara, Safana, Sabuwa, Faskari, and Dandume—key frontline communities grappling with persistent bandit attacks and communal clashes. This violence has disrupted education as children remain out of school, disrupted local economies with market closures, and caused parents to bury their children. Many elders have fled their ancestral homes to escape the conflict.
Governor Radda clarified that his administration has seen some success through community-led peace initiatives, restoring stability in four frontline LGAs and negotiating truces in two more. These efforts are part of a larger project implemented in collaboration with the International Organisation for Migration, Centre for Democracy and Development, and Mercy Corps to foster peace and socio-economic stability in both Katsina and Zamfara states.
Beyond insecurity, Katsina faces drought, desertification, and shrinking arable land, exacerbating conflicts by intensifying resource competition. Economic stagnation and youth unemployment further fuel the crisis, making integrated and culturally sensitive solutions essential.
The project aims to engage women, youths, and persons with disabilities centrally in planning and implementation to ensure locally owned and sustainable peace-building.
Despite the devastating humanitarian impact, Governor Radda expressed optimism about the resilience and determination of Katsina’s people to rebuild their communities amidst these challenges. The state government remains committed to enhancing security and stability while supporting displaced families.
