George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), has sharply criticized former presidential candidate and ex-governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, questioning his ability to lead Nigeria. Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Akume stated that Obi’s tenure in Anambra did not deliver the kind of transformational change expected, and therefore, he doubted Obi’s claims that he could rescue the entire country.

Akume underscored that if Obi could not effectively manage the affairs of Anambra State, it was unrealistic to expect him to address the complex challenges facing Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. The SGF praised President Bola Tinubu for his leadership, highlighting the country’s economic growth with a 4.4% GDP increase and an enhanced foreign reserve under his administration.

The SGF also pointed out that the government inherited a “very bad economy” but has since stabilized it through strong policies and unity across religious and ethnic divides. Akume dismissed opposition narratives about Nigeria needing rescue, stating that the current administration is on the right track and gaining positive recognition.

These remarks come amid heightened political tensions as the 2027 elections approach, reflecting the ongoing rivalry between the ruling party and opposition figures. Akume’s comments seek to reaffirm confidence in President Tinubu’s government while undermining opposition claims.
