Former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has officially declared his intention to contest for the position of National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Lamido made the announcement via a post on his verified Facebook page, revealing that he would visit the PDP national headquarters at Wadata Plaza, Abuja, to purchase his nomination form.
Lamido, who also served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and is one of the founding members of the PDP, expressed his unwavering commitment to strengthening internal democracy and restoring the party to its former glory. He emphasized his determinative resolve to rebuild and reposition the party ahead of forthcoming elections, underscoring his dedication to democracy and party unity.
The PDP, which governed Nigeria from 1999 to 2015, is poised to elect a new National Chairman during its upcoming national convention scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State. This leadership position has been zoned to the North and specifically micro-zoned to the North-West geopolitical zone, to which Lamido’s home state Jigawa belongs.
Lamido’s declaration comes amidst heightened political tensions within the party, as northern PDP stakeholders had earlier endorsed former Minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki as a consensus candidate for the chairmanship. However, factions allied with Lamido and other senior party members have rejected the consensus arrangement, calling for broader consultations and an open contest to ensure credible and inclusive leadership.
The move highlights the ongoing internal dynamics within the PDP as it prepares for the 2027 general elections, with leadership clashes reflective of the diverse interests and ambitions within the party’s hierarchy. Lamido’s campaign is rooted in the belief that revitalizing the PDP’s democratic space is essential for its survival and effectiveness in Nigeria’s multiparty system.
