Following their hard-fought 2-1 victory over Lesotho in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Nigeria’s Super Eagles have kept their hopes of reaching the World Cup alive. However, the team now faces a daunting task in their final group game against Benin Republic in Uyo, Akwa Ibom.
To qualify for the World Cup’s expanded 48-team tournament, the Super Eagles must win the game and hope other results go their way. More specifically, Nigeria needs to beat Benin Republic by at least two goals to improve their goal difference and overtake the group leaders.
Currently, Nigeria sits third in Group C with 14 points, trailing Benin Republic on 17 points and South Africa on 15 points. South Africa’s recent deduction of three points for fielding an ineligible player has slightly shifted the dynamics but not enough to secure Nigeria’s automatic qualification.
With only six points available from the remaining two matches, the Super Eagles must be at their best and combine attacking efficiency with defensive solidity. The pressure is on as Nigeria continues their drive to reclaim a World Cup spot after missing out on recent editions.
The final games promise to be intense, with every goal and point likely to count in the race for qualification from a fiercely competitive African group.
