Former Rivers State governorship candidate and APC chieftain Tonye Cole has dismissed rumors that he will join former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi in the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Speaking on the Arise Television program ‘Prime Time’ on September 9, 2025, Cole reiterated his commitment to the APC and affirmed he will contest the governorship election in Rivers State in 2027.
Cole, who ran unsuccessfully for governor in both 2019 and 2023, framed his upcoming campaign as a “third time lucky” bid to finally clinch the position. He openly acknowledged Amaechi’s role in introducing him to politics but made clear their political paths are now separate, noting Amaechi is pursuing the presidency while Cole remains focused on Rivers state.
Tonye Cole stated, “Nobody can take away the fact that he [Amaechi] brought me into politics. I have always had a lot of respect for individuals like Rotimi Amaechi and others. I have consistently said he has a goal and ambition where he wants to go, and so do I. I have my own ambition and goals.”
Cole also weighed in on the recently contested Rivers local government elections, expressing dissatisfaction with the process but urging all parties to move forward and focus on future opportunities for democratic engagement.
His candid remarks clarify his political stance amid speculation about potential party defections and signal his determination to remain a key player in Rivers politics.
