The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State has pledged resilience and renewed strength following the defection of Governor Peter Mbah and a large section of the party’s officials to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The switch marked a major political realignment in the South-East, as Enugu was the last PDP stronghold in the region until the defection.
In an official statement on October 23, 2025, PDP leaders in Enugu vowed that the party would regroup, reorganize, and remain committed to representing the people effectively. They described the defection as a setback but insisted it would not weaken their determination to reclaim lost ground in future elections.
Governor Mbah, who was elected under the PDP in 2023, formally announced his defection earlier in October, bringing with him commissioners, local government chairpersons, elected councillors, and over 80% of the PDP executives in the state. His decision was attributed to frustrations over the perceived marginalization of the South-East in the PDP at the national level and the desire for closer alignment with the federal government led by APC’s President Bola Tinubu.
PDP state leadership acknowledged the challenges ahead but emphasized their commitment to rebuilding the party base and engaging with grassroots supporters passionately. They remain hopeful about strengthening the party’s presence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
This political development highlights the shifting alliances and fierce contest for power within Nigeria’s evolving democratic landscape.
